In lieu of more detailed course information, here is a description of just one reading type within jyotish that the student can can master under Susan's tutolege:
AVASTHAA
This
is a prasna technique for determining the immediate concern and context of the
question on the querent’s mind. To determine the avastha, take the Moon’s
degree, multiply by 2 and divide by 5. If
there is a remainder the avastha moves to the next quotient. Principles of
jyotish analysis must be applied. If there are benefics associated or
aspecting the Moon and it is bright and well placed the descriptions below
will be ameliorated. If the Moon is week, aspected or associated with malefics
and poorly placed the meanings of the avasthaas apply in full. 1.PRAVAS/wandering: This
avasthaa means that the person is dissatisfied with present circumstances.
Their own behavior has created a recent problem.
They have lost their bearings, can’t compromise and tend to blame
others for their predicament. There
is great restlessness and a feeling that if they change their circumstances
life will return to ‘normal.’ When
will I travel? When will I
buy/repair the car? When will my
husband return from a trip? When
will money come? When will there
be a return to status quo? Will I
settle down, settle in a foreign country? 2.
NASH/Destruction: Moon
in this avasthaa means the person is fearful
and apprehensive. They have lost
money or property and their behaviour has separated them from the family. They
are troubled by competitors and enemies; are easily irritated and impatient. When will I get a job, a loan, a passport?
If afflicted there is danger of incarceration. 3.MARANA/Death-like
suffering: The
person is suffering from cruel and unusual sources i.e. addiction, their own
children reject them, regret and remorse caused by misunderstandings etc.
This person is inclined to mean and cruel actions and feels guilt,
desperate, even suicidal. The
comfort of strangers is welcome. How
is my brother’s welfare? Will a
letter, document, contract, thesis, book be accepted? Is this a good time for
short journey? 4. JAYA/Victory: This
person has won a long, hard battle either with internal forces or over an
external opponent and want to know if it’s for real.
When will I be happy / have a victory? I.e. Can I trust it?
Are my friends trustworthy? Person
optimistic and has a sense of ‘turning over a new leaf.
Person is concealing a clandestine affair.
Will I succeed in education? Pass
my exams? Buy a car?
This person has had little nurturing from the mother and is in need
emotional support. Wants to
nurture and be nurtured. 5. HASYA/Happiness: This
is a person on a mission to find and fall in love. Inspired
and inspiring but too far off the ground.
Often naïve and gullible to circumstance, they are very optimistic and
willing to embark on a big project / new project in the hopes that it can
change their fortune. Can I get
pregnant? Will I be reconciled
with my child? Will my child’s
health improve? What is my
spiritual path? How can I achieve my aspirations? If I take a chance will I be
lucky? Believes in miracles. 6.
RATI/Sensual love: Person
is victimized by own desire nature: lonely, demanding, confused, and
remorseful. Will I lose my
partner? Can I repair the damage
done? Perplexed about life,
person leans heavily on others for emotional support; inclined towards wo/men
who are instinct-injured and misery-loves-company friends.
If this person is in business, they will lose money.
This is a very difficult position as they blame the world for their
misfortune and can’t see that their behavior is alienating. 7. KRIDITA
/ Play Person
is ‘utsaha’, high spirited, fearless and prepared to do whatever necessary
to take on a big challenge, happiness and success, gainful partnership follow
depending on the condition of 7th lord etc. This person is in a
special relationship of some kind. Person
wants an emotionally mature and ‘genuine’ love and is willing to make
sacrifices to obtain this. Will my business partnership succeed?
Should I relocate to obtain opportunities?
Will I get married? Will
marriage work? 8.
SUPTA / Sleeping: This
person obsesses about a past grudge, is self-absorbed due to feelings of
insecurity and acts defensively towards imagined slights.
Person appears selfish to others and often creates arguments or
misunderstandings. Worries too
much about friends and family and their opinions and then tends to collapse on
them for moral support. Wants
fast relief to problems and will act deceptively to attain their ends. Wanders
in a foreign country, has ‘distance’ problems; wants intimacy but is
fearful of it. 9. MUKTA /
Bha: Person
has chenchill mind: fearful of insult and lazy about and resentful of
responsibilities. This is a very
unfortunate avastha for prashna considerations. Feels abandoned and that they
have transgressed a moral obligation and yet at the same time liberated as if
from an overbearing responsibility. Misery
and obstacles plague this persons every step.
Liberation is nigh if 9th is well aspected etc.
Marriage is toast but is unable to assume responsibility for this.
Will I ever be married? Will
I have a happy marriage? Desperately
wants to get settled, wants a good relationship with the father or mentor.
Wants others to do for him/her what she needs to do for him/herself. 10.
.SANTAB / Feverish: This
native needs to learn that behaviour matters.
Indignant and agitated, s/he has been confronted with the irresponsible
effects of their actions and their reputation is at stake.
Desires recognition yet exerts little effort: ‘the world owes me’.
Senses are dull and resentful and s/he feels jealous of others’ luck.
An argument has happened resulting in a ‘stand off’.
When will I be rewarded? When
will my angry partner return? When
will I have a son, change jobs, have success? 11.
KAMPANI/Hani : Native
undergoes loss because of his own action and imprudent speech. Lack of
self-confidence makes her over- dependent on others.
Disillusioned, s/he has been unable to keep promise made to others:
feels as if they have lost a dear friend and partner and they have; fears
enemies and loss of money. If
there are malefics in the 11th don’t lend or invest on expensive
articles or gamble on schemes which seem to promise fast money. 12.
